INTRODUCTION

Big Jackson Public School is a rural elementary school located in the northeastern corner of Newaygo County and has served the area for over 100 years. It is the only K-5 District left in Newaygo County and one of the few left in Michigan. This school serves the students in five townships and several School of Choice students from nearby school districts. The 6th - 12th grade students are bussed twenty minutes each day into the Big Rapids School District.

Big Jackson School is comprised of one main building and four portable buildings. The main building houses  Title I/Special Education programs and the cafeteria.  The North West portable is now the Administration Building.  One of the other portables houses the Third - Fifth Grades and another houses the Kindergarten - Second Grades.  Finally, the last portable is used as a library/storage room.

Students at Big Jackson Public School enjoy a small class size with many individualized programs to enhance their learning. The current enrollment is 16 students. With 2 teachers, there is a 1:8  teacher/student ratio.

Newaygo County is a low income area in which good paying jobs are scarce. Eighty percent of the students of Big Jackson School qualify for free or reduced lunch. These are some of the reasons the school district has the responsibility to the educators and the students to provide the most current technology available. However, strong community support and the acquisition of various grants enable the school to survive and succeed in a technological world. Big Jackson Public School has a full day Kindergarten to assist in the K-2 Development Plan.
